The author provides quite detailed descriptions of more than 1100 printed works, along with a listing of 365 little known mineral springs.

Famed compiler, Joseph de Laporte (1713-1779) quit the Jesuit order to become a litterateur, at first embroiling himself in literary battles with Fréron, defending Voltaire and Rousseau against Fréron's attacks; but later Laporte reconciled himself with his old adversary and collaborated with him on l'Annee littéraire, eventually splitting off to publish his own periodical, l'Obervateur littéraire, where he began to resume his attacks on Fréron. ¶ Only Edition of the most lavishly produced catalogue of erotic literature ever published, a sumptuous, key reference to many thusfar unrecorded or exceedingly scarce volumes, with reproduced titlepages and illustrations to each of the entries as well as lengthly, erudite, detailed notes and commentary with information not found elsewhere. ¶ The late Gerard Nordmann (1930-1992) of Geneva amassed one of the greatest collections of erotica in history, a library of near 2000 books, manuscripts, letters, documents, and curiosa noted for its emphasis on items of very small limitation and much unique material, not the least of which are Sade's autograph manuscript for 120 Journées de Sodome, the autograph manuscript of Reage/Aury/Desclos' Histoire d'O, the only extant copy of the first edition of Aretino's Sonnetti Lusssuriosi, and the first edition of La Popelinière's Tableaux des Moeurs du Temps...(1750). Cuneiform was, until Rawlinson's astonishing work in 1846, the last culturally significant script to be entirely undeciphered and it was to be many more years before the four stages of cuneiform writing were all understood (cf. Diringer); thus this work is very early in the field and is a significant typographic specimen. Neither Birell and Garnett nor other standard bibliographical sources cite any example of cuneiform printing.

¶ Revised edition of the preeminent dictionary of universal biography. Sheehy calls it "The most important of the large dictionaries of universal biography, still very useful." Begun in 1843, the revised edition of Michaud was interrupted in 1852 by a law suit undertaken by Mme Desplaces, its publisher, against Didot Frères, who had started a rival dictionary edited by Hoefer, who had taken many articles from Michaud. After a lengthy court battle, the case was finally won by Mme Desplaces in 1855 and Didot was forbidden to copy any more from the Biographie Universelle. Sheehy AJ17.
